Centennial Olympic Park renderings shed light on renovation, expansion

The plans for the renovation and expansion of Centennial Olympic became a little clearer this week with the release of renderings hinting at the changes in store.

Planned for nearly two years, the project will add 3 acres of green space, new entrances, a new events venue, and a maintenance building. It’ll also rehab the existing amphitheater.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the design team hoped to capture the spirit of both the first modern Olympic Games and the Centennial Olympics, which Atlanta hosted in 1996.

Designed by Atlanta-based DTJDesign, the renovations include sculptures and landscaping that pay homage to records set during the Atlanta games.

The biggest change will come in the form of an expansion, opening the park’s western edge to Marietta Street and the College Football Hall of Fame. To allow for this, the former home of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce will be torn down, starting immediately.

Phase I of the work, which includes the new landscaping and some of the new hardscaping, will be complete by the end of the year. The new events facility, slated to be constructed on the northwestern side of the Park, will wrap by January 2019, officials said.
