Marquez graduated in 1985 with a degree in mass communication and journalism. While at Fresno State, he wrote for two publications, The Daily Collegian and its supplement La Voz de Aztlan, the Chicano student newspaper. He also served as The Collegian’s managing editor.

He later earned a master’s degree at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism before embarking on a three-decade career that took him to AP’s second-largest U.S. bureau and one of its busiest.

In 2010, he returned to campus to speak on a panel as part of the University’s centennial celebration that academic year. In 2013, he received the Fresno State Alumni Association’s Top Dog Award on behalf of the College of Arts and Humanities. The CSU has featured Marquez among its Notable CSU Graduates in Entertainment & Media.

Marquez is survived by his wife Maureen, who also is a 1985 graduate of Fresno State, and their three children, Paul, Aaron and Francesca.
