With all eyes on Rio, Global Village joins in the fun with music from Brazil throughout the entire week. We kick things off with a show that highlights some sounds from modern Brazil – including two albums featuring Vinicius Cantuaria (one with Bill Frisell, the other with Ricardo Silveira), also the ‘nova bossa nova’ band Bossacucanova, and neo-tropicalia group Garotas Suecas. Plus reggae legends Toots & the Maytals, and a little musical diversion from Steely Dan.
Tuesday, August 16
Global Village returns again to Brazil for a variety of artists and styles of music in celebration of the Summer Olympics. Among the highlights, tropicalia great Caetano Veloso’s Latin Grammy winning album, Abracaco, neo-tropicalia sounds from Garotas Suecas, music from Brazilian bass culture, the Afro-Brazilian inspired duo of Da Lata, Nilson Matta’s re-working of music from the classic Black Orpheus, and Brazilian jazz percussion great, Airto.
Wednesday, August 17
Global Village marks the birthday of adventurous and eclectic Lebanese oud player Rabih Abou Khalil; and continues with more of a week-long tour of Brazilian music, including the U.S. debut of Renata Braz, French-based Brazilian guitarist and singer Marcio Faraco, and another Paris-based Brazilian artist, Flavia Coelho with special guest, August featured artist Tony Allen.
Thursday, August 18
Global Village heads to Scotland for music from a wide range of artists from traditional to contemporary, veterans to rising stars. Among the highlights, music from John Martyn, Shooglenifty, Old Blind Dogs, Karine Polwart, Big Country, Julie Fowlis, and (Glasgow-born) Mark Knopfler.
Friday, August 19
Global Village pays tribute to Padraig Duggan – guitarist, mandolinist and founding member of the popular Irish band Clannad – who passed away last week. Plus birthday salutes to singer Johnny Nash and drummer Ginger Baker. We’ll hear Baker recorded live with Fela & Africa 70 (a band that included August featured artist Tony Allen) and an afrobeat inspired piece from his last album.
