Dr. James E. Marshall, who has been serving as interim dean of Dean of Graduate Studies at Fresno State for the past 18 months, will assume the new role of Dean of Research and Graduate Studies on July 1, 2016.
Dr. Lynnette Zelezny, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said “Dr. Marshall is a loyal servant-leader at Fresno State, who has visionary ideas about expanding grants to support the Central Valley and access to graduate education to improve regional workforce development.”
Prior to his role in Graduate Studies, Marshall served as professor and Associate Dean of the Kremen School of Education and Human Development. During his 26 years at Fresno State, Marshall has held several other leadership roles including Graduate Program coordinator, department chair and director of the doctoral program in Educational Leadership.
As an active scholar, he has served as principal investigator on over $8.3 million in grants, has published 34 articles in professional journals and textbooks, and has made numerous presentations to state, national and international audiences.
In 2006, he received the President’s Award for Excellence from Fresno State.
Marshall is also active in the community, having served on the boards of Yosemite Institute, San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust, and the Fresno Metropolitan Museum. He currently serves as editor of Educational Renaissance, the journal of the Renaissance Group.
With a bachelor’s degree in Resource Conservation and Wildlife Ecology, a master’s in Biology and Science Education and a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of South Florida, Marshall worked as a field biologist for the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission then taught science at both the high school and the elementary school level in Tampa, Fla., before joining the Fresno State faculty.
